AI is the buzzword of the year. Every piece of software you've ever logged into now has an AI feature, an AI roadmap, and a press release about both.
If you're a vet reading this (which you probably are), it's difficult to know what AI actually means for you, and how vet practice is likely to change.
Let me explain.
AI-native means the AI is part of the system's foundation from day one, able to see and act on everything in the practice, rather than a feature added on top of software that was designed before AI existed.
Most software is reactive. You ask it a question, it gives you an answer, and it waits for you to ask the next one. You do the reasoning, and the system takes the action you define.
An AI-native system is built to work the other way round. At Lupa, we want to make it proactive: the system reads what's already in the record and tells you what needs attention, an overdue booster, a missed follow-up, a lab result worth a second look, before you've thought to ask.
How it's different from the system you're using now
If you think about a Practice Management System, it's just a system of record. Before a PMS existed, we used to write things on a document. What most PMS platforms are doing today is storing those same things into a computer instead of paper, saving them in a database, and letting you retrieve them whenever you want.
So today, the record is digital. But the work of creating it didn't change. You still type the notes. You still build the invoice. You still fill in the new patient form field by field. The computer stores the result.
That work has been piling up across the whole profession. In a 2025 survey by the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe, 64% of vets said their administrative workload has doubled in recent years, and most said more than half of it can't be charged to anyone. The cost isn't only hours. Researchers at Cornell put the price of burnout to the US veterinary industry at around $2 billion a year in lost revenue, driven by people cutting their hours or leaving the profession altogether. Admin isn't the whole story behind burnout, but it's the part software created, and the part software can take back.
Here's what's exciting about AI. All that manual inputting is about to change, because AI can now do the writing of the documents too. For decades, computers could only store what someone typed into them. The shift of the past few years is that software can now listen, read, and write. A consult gets captured as it happens and written up in the format your practice uses. An invoice draft comes from what was actually said in the room. Upload a referral letter and the patient record builds itself from it, no field-by-field typing.
The other half of AI-native is connection. When the AI lives inside the system rather than beside it, everything it produces flows to where it's needed without a person carrying it. A phone call becomes a pre-appointment note. A lab result gets read against that pet's own history, correlated with everything already known about that patient, before you've looked at it. Nobody re-types anything into a second screen.
What AI can already do for vets, across the market
AI in veterinary work is further along than most people think. The British Veterinary Association found around 1 in 5 vets already use AI in their daily work, and that was before the current generation of tools. Across the market, that mostly looks like:
- AI scribes that listen to a consult and write the clinical notes
- Imaging tools that help interpret radiographs
- Assistants that answer questions or draft client communications
- Phone and triage tools that handle calls and route urgent cases
All of these are real, and most of them genuinely help. The catch is that most are standalone products. They do one job, they do it outside the PMS, and they can't see the patient record or act on anything in it. A standalone scribe still leaves someone copying notes into the system. A standalone phone tool books nothing.
That's the difference between using AI as a standalone tool, and using AI-native software. The AI-native software can see and act on the same information you can.
If a vendor tells you their software is AI-native, ask three things. Does it only answer when you ask, or does it flag things you didn't think to ask about? If a client books a call or you run a consult, does that information show up everywhere else it's needed on its own? And are you ever re-typing something the system already knows, just into a different screen? If the answer to that last one is yes, it's bolted on, whatever the marketing says. That test applies to us as much as anyone.
What AI-native already looks like in a vet PMS
Here's what that looks like in practice. These are the tools we've built at Lupa, but treat the list as a picture of where the whole category is heading:

How AI will change your day to day
Start with the small stuff, because the small stuff is what eats the day. For example, registering a new patient means typing the owner's name, address and phone number, then the pet's weight, microchip number, insurance details and date of birth. All of it manual. It's a common, repetitive and, let's face it, energy-draining task. With an AI-native system, you upload a referral letter instead and the record builds itself.

A vet's day is full of these moments, and that's what makes this exciting: AI will genuinely change how you spend your time. More of it with patients, less of it on the admin that looms over every practice. Given what that admin load is doing to the profession, this matters well beyond any one product. It should mean happier staff and better patient outcomes. We believe that within 6 to 12 months, the AI will be so good it will be impossible to ignore.
What happens to your data
Usually the first question a practice asks, and a fair one.
Whatever vendor you're talking to, ask them for the same two things: their data retention policy with their AI providers, and their independent audit. A good one will show you both quickly, and a vague answer to either is your cue to keep looking.

What this looks like in practice
Bonnie, a vet at Max and Min, uses AI Pet Summary before every consult. Now the medication history, the reason for the last visit, and anything to be careful of is in front of her before the client sits down.
