Veterinary computer systems hold the clinical records, diary, payments and stock for a practice. How they developed from 1970s record systems to cloud software and AI, and what to check before you choose one.

Local servers made practice software useful for daily work. Cloud services later put it online, and AI can now draft notes and handle routine tasks.
What is a veterinary computer system?
A veterinary computer system can mean all the tech in a practice: computers, the local network, diagnostic kit and software. Most UK teams call the main application the practice management system, or PMS.
The PMS is where your team records the work of the practice. It commonly covers:
- the appointment diary and online booking
- client and patient records
- consultation notes, prescriptions and treatment plans
- estimates, invoices and payments
- medicine and consumable stock
- reminders, reports and client messages

When did veterinary computer systems enter practices?
Vets used computers before desktop PMS products existed. A 1976 paper described a record system used by veterinary diagnostic labs. It processed lab records and printed reports.
In 1986, a US review of computers in veterinary practices looked back at the early years of use in small animal practice. Personal computers became easier for small businesses to buy and use during that decade. Veterinary software then took over work held in paper files, ledgers and appointment books.
PMS packages became common through the late 1980s and 1990s. A later review found that practices mainly used computers for word processing and practice management. Online information services were also starting to appear.
Those systems gave practices searchable records, computerised billing and shared access to the diary. The main jobs of a PMS still look familiar today.
Why server-based veterinary systems became standard
A server-based PMS keeps its main database on a server at the practice. Reception, consulting rooms and offices reach it through the local network.
This setup suited the technology of the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. Internet links were slower and less reliable. Keeping the software and data in the building gave the team steady local access. The practice or its IT firm handled the hardware, updates, security and backups.
Many server-based products remain in use. Suppliers still support and update some older systems. Their design often relies on desktop software, local networks and planned releases. Remote access can need extra setup, and the hardware must be maintained and replaced.

How cloud veterinary software changed the setup
Cloud veterinary software runs on servers managed by the provider. Your team opens it through a browser or app. The provider handles hosting, routine backups and updates.
Staff can log in from different sites or approved devices. The supplier can update every customer without arranging an install at each practice. The practice needs reliable internet and a backup connection.
Two types of product are commonly described as cloud software:
- Cloud-hosted software moves an older desktop app to a remote server. Your team may still need installed software or a remote desktop.
- Cloud-native software is built to run online, usually through a browser. It is designed for regular updates and links to other services.
This affects mobile access, update speed and how well the system can share data with other software.
Why practices added more standalone tools
During the 2000s and 2010s, practices added more products around the PMS. Booking, client messages, card payments, rotas, stock, reports and digital imaging often came from different suppliers.
Each product could solve one problem. The full setup could leave staff moving data between screens, keeping several logins and paying twice for similar functions. A consult note might sit in the PMS while the payment, reminder and follow-up message pass through other products.
The PMS stayed at the centre while the wider setup became harder to manage. Many practices now want a platform that keeps more of the work in one place.
How AI is changing veterinary computer systems
AI lets the veterinary computer system prepare work or carry out a set task. It uses information that the practice already holds.
The British Veterinary Association reported in 2025 that 21% of vets used AI in their daily work. Vets also named the benefits: 40% cited time saved, and 38% cited routine admin or note-taking.
Current veterinary uses include:
- an AI scribe that records a consult and drafts a structured clinical note
- an AI receptionist that handles defined calls, records the conversation and books an appointment
- software that reads a referral letter and fills the relevant patient fields
- software that suggests invoice items, reminders or follow-up tasks from the record
Clinical output still needs a vet's review. The BVA survey found that 83% were concerned about results used without context. A further 82% saw a risk when people use AI without follow-up checks. The vet checks the note, fixes errors and approves the record.
What is a veterinary operating system?
A veterinary operating system puts the PMS and more practice software in one platform. Records, appointments, payments, client messages, reports and AI can use the same current data. Staff have less to copy into another product.

- Hosting: Is it server-based, cloud-hosted or cloud-native? What happens if the internet or hardware fails?
- Data movement: Which records will transfer? How will you check and export them?
- Connections: Do labs, suppliers, payments, booking and client messages update the same record?
- AI controls: Which tasks can AI prepare or complete? Who approves them, and how does the supplier handle personal data?
- Daily use: Can vets, nurses and reception staff test common tasks before the practice signs?
The answers show how the system will affect a normal consulting day. A feature list cannot show how many screens the team will open or how often staff will type the same data twice.

Yes. Some desktop PMS products can run on a remote server and be reached online. This is cloud-hosted software. It keeps more of the older desktop design than a cloud-native product.

Many systems can send lab orders and add results or images to the patient record. The links differ by supplier, test type and PMS, so check the exact services your practice uses.
Does a new veterinary practice need its own server?
No. A cloud PMS runs on the provider's servers, so the practice does not need to buy or maintain its own main server. The practice still needs computers, a secure network and a backup internet connection.
